What is Multi Sensory Stimulation?
Multi-sensory stimulation can be an effective way to improve the quality of life for people with dementia. Dementia is a neurodegenerative condition that affects cognitive and functional abilities, as well as sensory processing. Multi-sensory stimulation involves using various sensory stimuli, such as sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste, to engage the person’s senses and stimulate their brain.
Some examples of multi-sensory stimulation activities for people with dementia may include sensory boxes or trays with items that can be touched, smelled, and seen.
A published scientific study from 2018 conducted through a literature review of 30 academic articles called “Sensory and memory stimulation as a means to care for individuals with dementia in long-term care facilities” conclude that sensory and memory stimulation therapies have the potential to help improve many dementia-specific issues for individuals living in long-term care settings.
